It may look like a boogie board with fins but I assure you, this radical new snowboard inspired surfboard by Moda ($350.00) is no toy.
The telltale boogie board look comes from Moda’s exterior, made from soft materials common to high-end bodyboards.  This durable exterior was chosen because its doesn’t counter the snowboard flex behavior of the internal core.  This material is actually safer, more durable and environmentally friendly compared to traditional surfboards.
The internal snowboard inspired core is really what sets Moda Surfboards apart from the pack.  Moda surfboards flex without plowing because the flex has the range, patterns, and snap back you might expect to find in a snowboard.
A traditional surfboard is more or less rigid, maintaining its shape while under the stress of being ridden, while a Moda Board flexes and changes shapes depending on the demands of its rider. Ever seen a surfboard do this:
The result is a board that flexes with the arc of a turn and flattens out for speed when you’re pointing it. Moda Surfboard’s founder Brenton Woo has a simple reason for the design

While the design might seem like a novelty, just remember the revolution in snowboard design spawned by Lib Tech’s innovative and once novel Banana Board (who’s laughing now).
Time will tell if Woo’s surfboards go mainstream, but I would sure like to find out how they ride in the mean time.
