The avalanche, whose debris pile measured a whopping 98 feet deep, ultimately killed 9 people, 350 sheep, and 110 yaks in the village of Dungru in the Aru Range. Currently, the mass of the avalanche is unknown but experts estimate that the expanse of the debris pile makes it one of the largest ice avalanches ever recorded.

So far, the trigger is unknown but many climate experts believe the cause is related to global warming. Andreas Kääb, who works as a glaciologist at the University of Oslo says these type of avalanche are completely new scientifically speaking and further research is needed prior to identifying the cause of the massive slide.
