It’s a perfect fall day in Park City as temperatures in the West are peaking in the 70’s at higher elevations while the Aspens are beginning to fall from the trees. This may be one of my favorite times of the year to scream singletrack through the the trees and think about the upcoming winter.

Summary: Warm temperatures this week will migrate to a cold N, NW flow that will move onshore over the Cascades, Sierra late this weekend and into a wide area of the Rockies next week. Models differ on exact storm tracks with the best potential for snowfall over the northern Rockies early next week.

Details: Moderate low pressure will be moving onshore near the Pacific Northwest early this weekend. GFS keeps most of moisture offshore with spotty rain showers and some snow showers developing Saturday/Sunday over the Cascades of Washington and Oregon. We feel that most of the moisture will drag south along the Coast through Oregon and move inland over far northern California before dropping south through the Sierra . Light snow is likely in the Sierra through Monday morning above 5,000 feet. Folks near Lake level will even see some white teases for the first time this season. Our expectations are 1-4 inches currently depending on elevation.

The Cascades should squeak out light snow through Sunday but an increase may occur early next week as more moisture works inland. Models show the parent low dropping down from interior BC (Light snow above 7,000 feet) and into Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado early next week. Models differ significantly on amounts with the best chances of moderate snowfall happening over the northern Tetons, southern Montana (Bridger can do well with North winds), and to a lesser extent the Wasatch and most of northern Colorado. One model keeps most snow through Wyoming and the far northern reaches of Colorado (Perhaps Steamboat) and another brings significant snow through most of Colorado including Summit County and the central portion of the State early next week.
