Not sure of the plausibility of this but military.com is reporting that a ski resort for members of the military and the families could open near Park City, Utah.
The lodge would be located 60 miles away from Hill Air Force Base near Deer Valley Resort and be built primarily on Air Force land but would not be owned by the Air Force. Rather it would be operated by a contractor and constructed (with no federal tax dollars) by Utah’s Military Installation Development Authority (MIDA). The resort will most likely be funded by tax revenue from other MIDA projects and financing from the company that wins the construction contract.
If you’re wondering how the Air Force plans on running a ski resort this is what a proponent of the project has to say:
“The Air Force is really good at doing our mission, which is defending the nation. We recognize that we don’t run resorts. We try to do a really good job with our Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities, but really recognize that if this is going to work, it needs to be done on a very professional basis.”
This project doesn’t just come out of thin air, the Air Force previously owned a rustic ski lodge in the same area that was permanently closed to make room for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Legislation in the 2002 National Defense Authorization Act included land for a replacement location as long as no taxpayer money was used to fund construction or operation.
