It’s not often you hear about government actively seeking to destroy wildlife but in the case of New Zealand, they’re killing in the name of conservation reports The Guardian.

On Monday, New Zealand’s PM, John Key unveiled a program that would eliminate all non-native predators by 2050. Those predators include rats, possums, and the stoat from New Zealand’s ecologically diverse landscape.

As of now, New Zealand loses approximately $2.3 million dollars each year because of invasive predators and by ridding itself of these “pests,” New Zealand hopes to safeguard its diverse population of avian species as well as their surrounding habitats.
