While The 4th of July celebration on the Snake River is notoriously rowdy, Jackson residents typically understand that cars and the river don’t mix– until now.

According to the Jackson Hole News and Guide, a woman’s Dodge Sedan somehow ended up floating down the Snake during the late afternoon hours on Monday after rolling off a residential road near Hoback Junction. The car would ultimately sink to the bottom of the Snake River. Kayakers were at the scene at the time and paddled up to the vehicle to confirm there was nobody in the castaway vehicle. They later ripped off the license plate, which allowed law enforcement officials to track down the owner.

While law enforcement officials are still scratching their heads as to how the car ended up in the river, they do know that the 52 year-old Jackson woman who owns the vehicle had previously gotten into a fight with her boyfriend while hanging out at the jumping rock. She later blew a .13 BAC and told deputies she had no idea how the car ended up in the river.
Authorities believe the car is located somewhere in the deep waters just below where the Hoback River joins the Snake. Divers attempted to locate the vehicle but were unsuccessful in their efforts.
The woman avoided being charged due to lack of evidence that she was driving or operating the vehicle at the time of the incident. The car is located on a section of the Snake managed by the Bridger-Teton National Forest and it will ultimately be up to USFS officials to extract the vehicle.
