“It’s about seeing America at the right speed, where you can take in all of the culture around you and you don’t have a windshield between yourself and the community.”  -East Coast Greenway Alliance Executive Director Dennis Markatos-Soriano

Have you ever dreamed of pedaling from Calais, Maine, to Key West, Florida without having to deal with the anxiety of tractor trucks whizzing by you? Well this non-motorized traffic free travel dream is well on its way to becoming a reality.

east coast greenwayThe East Coast Greenway will be the nation’s longest bike path once complete, stretching 2,900 miles from Maine to Florida as reported by ecowatch.com. This monumental project that will take bikers through 25 cities and 16 states has been in the works since the early 1990’s but only really began substantial construction in the past year.

“Our route has been chosen to provide the traveler with an ever-changing, interesting and scenic landscape, whether urban, suburban, small town, industrial or rural.”east coast greenway

Construction of the path is dependent on local development and gives each state or locality ownership of its section, ultimately connecting them into one continuous trail. So far one-third of the greenway has been completed.

We can’t wait until its finished and celebrate projects that encourage taking in our nation’s sights under pedal power!

Here are last year’s highlights from the trail:
