Normally summer solstice @GrandTetonNationalPark is a time for celebration but this year a tragic incident is casting a dark shadow on the otherwise sunny holiday.

According to National Geographic, park officials are investigating a hit and run incident that claimed the life of a bear cub within the park’s boundary. The cub in question was the offspring of the world famous Grizzly 399. So far, reports indicate that a car collided and killed “snowy” near the Pilgrim Creek drainage on Sunday night or early Monday morning.

Grizzly 399 desperately tried to attend to her injured offspring, which sparked a firestorm of social media vitriol against the culprit who has yet to be identified. After dragging her deceased cub off the road, 399 was last reported to have been acting erratically in the Pilgrim Creek Drainage, which park officials have closed off temporarily. A formal investigation is underway.
