The Ski Safety Bill in New York state requiring all skiers under 14 to wear a helmet failed to make it through the state assembly after passing through the state senate. The bill would have also require ski resorts to provide a reasonable inventory of rental helmets and mandate lift tickets clearly state children under 14 are required by law to wear helmets or be fined. The bill was sponsored by republican New York state Senator Betty Little who had this to say when she spoke with wamc.org:

“This bill actually is modeled after the bicycle helmet bill. And the idea is really that there is a law that will help parents for kids that don’t want to wear a helmet. And the ski areas they will warn people. They will have signs that this is that way to ski and is safer. But the onus is really on the parents to make sure that their kids are wearing a ski helmet.”

Whether or not its required by law, we here at Unofficial Networks are big fans of preventing head injuries and believe everyone should embrace the bucket. Even if you’re the best skier on the mountain, you never know when some out of control goober is going to sideswipe you.  Stay safe out there!
