Obviously if you run the marketing department at a resort you aren’t going to focus on the dangers of enjoying the mountain but glossing over it entirely can lead to a false sense of security for tourists.  The BBC teamed up with The University of West England to produce this documentary exploring how media can skew the perception of danger in mountain resorts in favor of tourism and away from general safety.

“This documentary asks if enough is being done to protect tourists from the dangers of Avalanches. Is enough being done? What problems to the mountain rescue teams face? Are the tourist authorities doing enough to educate tourists about the risks and how to off piste ski safely. This film explores this subject by taking an individual, Scott Kitson (23 year old season worker in St Anton, Austria) on a journey. He believes that ski safety equiptment is pointless, and that if you know how to read the mountain you don’t need the equiptment. Can we change his perception? We explore this by not only introducing to stories of real incidence, including a story about Christian Zangerle, who died in an avalanche on Christmas Eve 2002,he was a professional ski guide for 20 years. As well as being told these stories, we take Scott on a journey in which we burry him alive under a reconstructed avalanche, will this change his opinion on snow safety?”
