While the summer Olympics have long been known for hosting formulaic and traditional sports such as track and field, soccer, and gymnastics, three new sports are looking to break that monotony.

According to a recent release from the International Olympic Committee, skateboarding and surfing are being discussed as possible additions in a five sport addition to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The other sports up for approval include karate, sport climbing, and baseball/softball.

The 5 sport package would add 18 events and 474 athletes to the 2020 Summer Olympic

The five sport package is at the top of the list of things that IOC officials are currently discussing concerning the 2020 Olympic Agenda. However, fans of the following sports will have to wait till sometime in 2017 before any decisions are made official. In the meantime, surfers are wondering whether or not surf events would be held on natural waves or if a wave facility like Kelly Slater’s would be utilized for its predictability and wave equity.
