While its been a relatively warm and low snow year for the alps, Ullr hasn’t given up on his European brothers yet. Starting today, a massive winter storm is projected to move into the alps and some models are going so far as to forecast up to 89″ in some spots of the central and eastern alps by Sunday.

It appears as though the Föhn (warm southern wind) is in effect till Thursday before wind patterns shift toward a northern orientation. Those northern winds should bring colder temperatures and lower snow levels to the mountains by early Friday and last through Sunday.

It appears as though Saas Fee and Zermatt will bear the brunt of this oncoming storm but locations such as Andermatt, Engelberg, and Airolo should benefit from large accumulations over the course of the next 6 days as well.

What does that mean?

A much larger snowpack for the likes of Saas Fee and Zermatt’s glacier skiing in the summertime.
