30 feet. That’s how far Brian Bates’ son fell after holding on to his father’s pant leg for dear life– literally.
The incident, which occurred at Liberty Mountain Resort back on January 10th resulted in “physical and emotional” damages says Bates, who is suing for $75,000 reports The York Daily Record. In the suit, Bates claims the Pennsylvania resort exhibited negligence and believes the whole situation should have been avoided.
According to court documents, the boy was in the chairlift loading area when he dropped his ski pole. He attempted to pick up the pole but before he knew it, the oncoming chair struck the boy from behind. In the process, the son grabbed onto his father’s pant leg while being whisked up the mountain.
The father says that resort officials failed to stop the chair quickly enough even as people yelled and screamed in horror. By the time they did stop the chair, the father and son were an aggravating 30 seconds from the top and 30 feet from the ground.
Eventually, the son lost his grip and plummeted to the snow.
In an initial report, resort officials indicated there was no chairlift malfunction and that the mechanism was operating how it should.
