Currently the Météo Ski App only covers the French Alps and the Pyrénées range in the southwest of France but there are already plans to expand the program. Many see this technology as a direct response to the recent rash of avalanche deaths that have gotten worldwide attention.
The app combines standard weather intel from traditional data collecting devices with that of more than 100 professional ski patrollers as they survey the current conditions on their mountains to provide realtime avalanche conditions for app users.
The free to download application measures avalanche danger on an easy to understand scale of 1-5 and also provides useful information such as ski maps and lift closing times. The user simply opens the app and selects their location and can use the information provided to avoid high risk areas on the resort they are skiing.
So far the application is only available in French but an English version and a plan to expand the coverage area are in the works.
