The Jackson Hole “sidecountry” is no joke and now 3 Californians are walking away with a first hand knowledge of what getting extreme in the JH backcountry is all about.

According to the Jackson Hole News and Guide, a group of five skiers left the resort’s boundary and ventured into Rock Springs via the “Why Not” gate on the south side of JHMR. After entering the backcountry, the party split up, leaving three of the five skiers over an exposed cliff area. Those 3 skiers would eventually fall roughly 60 feet over the cliff. The people involved sustained injuries that are being reported as “minor to serious” by the Jackson Hole News and Guide.

The accident was reported by a witness, who called the JHMR Ski Patrol. A search and rescue helicopter as well as a toboggan were utilized in the rescue effort and all the victims survived the ordeal.
