An estimated 4,000 people have climbed the world highest mountain, Mt. Everest, since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made it to the top of the world in 1953. Climbers have also reached the submits of all 14 of the world’s 8,000 meter peaks. But what’s the world’s highest mountain that’s never been climbed?

But which of these peaks have never been climbed? That’s tricky too, because mountaineers and locals don’t always keep comprehensive records. But the most likely candidate is Gangkhar Puensum, a 24,840-foot monster on the border between Bhutan and Tibet. By most reckonings, it’s the world’s 40th-tallest peak. Maps of its far-flung location have been so inaccurate over the years that the first team to attempt the summit couldn’t even find it!
