The person who died in an avalanche on Sunday near Mt. Baker Ski Area has been identified as 36 year-old Mark Panthen of Bellingham, Washington reports the Bellingham Herald. Yesterday afternoon, search and rescue personnel discovered the skier’s body a day after the accident occurred.

Panthen was skiing with a partner on 6,280 foot Mount Herman when the avalanche struck their group. The second skier suffered an apparent head injury and his identity has yet to be released. The pair were at an elevation of 4,200 feet at the time and were originally caught in a smaller slide before being engulfed by a larger avalanche. The fatal slide came from above and the actual trigger is still unknown.

In the meantime, a memorial fund has been set up in Mark’s honor. Proceeds will benefit Mark’s family that includes his wife Amanda Peart as well as their two children Oakley and Caden.

“Mark was a loving husband and father who threaded a healthy, active lifestyle through his relationships with friends and family. His smile, energetic look in his eyes, his kindness, his everything will be missed. Mark, who was 36, is survived by his wife, Amanda Peart and their two children Caden and Oakley. This sudden loss has devastated the family and close friends. Even though we can offer support, both emotionally and physically, I feel there is more we can do to help. Open your heart and please help Mark’s family through this terrible period in their lives and help them make the financial transition of life without Mark at their sides.”- Friends of Mark, Amanda, Caden & Oakley
