The french school teacher who’s school group was involved in an avalanche that left three dead has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Yesterday, the teacher led 10 teenage students from St-Exupery school in Lyon, France onto a closed ski run that resulted in a triggering of an avalanche that killed 2 of the students as well as a Ukrainian skier who was not part of the group.

Today, prosecutors announced that the physical education teacher has been charged with involuntary manslaughter. He has not been taken into custody, because he is in critical conditions in a hospital near Grenoble, France.

“How can you think of taking children, following periods of heavy snowfall, onto a piste which was closed?” – French Minister for Youth and Sports Patrick Kanner

A skier within a group of Romanians and Hungarians who’d been backcountry skiing at the time, expressed fears to police that they might have unknowingly set off the avalanche.

Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the slide, as well as the teachers’ roles. They plan to question the two other St.-Exupery teachers, other witnesses and surviving students.
