Winter weather can be downright dangerous.

As skiers and snowboarders, we view snow as a literal godsend that allows us to go bigger and faster, while cushioning our falls when make mistakes. However, in New Jersey, snow’s darker side reared its ugly head last week as Superstorm Sandy blanketed the east coast.

During the storm, one New Jersey family was attempting to dig out their car when conditions became too frigid. Seeking shelter from the storm, the wife and two children of Felix Bonilla got inside their car. While his family sought refuge from the cold, Mr. Bonilla continued to dig out the running car but failed to realize the exhaust pipe had been clogged with snow.

When the father turned his attention back to his family, he realized that his family members were not responsive. Mr. Bonilla’s neighbors told NBC New York, that the father started “crying and jumping” after finding his wife and children unconscious. He later dialed 9-1-1 as neighbors performed CPR on the victims. Once on the scene, paramedics failed to find a pulse for Bonilla’s wife and one year old daughter. The 3 year-old daughter remains in critical condition.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 5,100 people died from unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning between 1999 and 2010. Police in New Jersey and Beyond are warning all residents to make sure their exhaust pipe is clear before turning on their car in winter conditions.

* Our deepest condolences go out to the friends and family of the victims
