The Powder Forecast center is spinning with models tonight just looking for the next best chases in the West. Today was simply “Epic” in the Wasatch as the snow report with 6 inches turned into 12-15 at upper elevations in Little Cottonwood Canyon.  I was at Snowbird and can testify under oath!

Very light snow showers will continue in the Wasatch tonight (2-5) as well as most of western Colorado.  Steamboat might nab higher amounts by Saturday morning.

The next series of storms for the Rockies bring warmer temperatures and more wind.  The first skirts across Idaho late Saturday morning (4-6) and into Western Montana and  the Tetons by 2PM.  Moderate snow will fall in the Tetons through Sunday morning (6-10).  The Wasatch grabs snowfall under SW flow late Saturday into Sunday.  Northern Wasatch may be favored near Powder and Snowbasin (4-7).  Big Cottonwood tends to fair better with SW flow than Little Cottonwood who saw higher totals today under NW flow. Powder Mountain could be a reprieve from the crowds in LLC and BCC.

Another system looks bullish for most of central and southern Idaho (Sun Valley), late Sunday night.   That system makes its way into Western Montana, Tetons and Wasatch  on Monday (Storm skiing might keep the holiday crowds at check).  Amounts look decent for the Tetons (Slightly less in the Wasatch and Montana).

Colorado sees decent action Saturday night into Sunday with Westerly flow.   While forecasts are not calling for high amounts, I feel that resorts from Steamboat through I-70 including Aspen and perhaps the northern San Juans can reap moderate rewards! Expect a powder day on Sunday with 5-10 inches in many locations (If you get skunked feel free to write in but we won’t offer refunds). Northern Colorado will also grab moderate snow late Monday into Tuesday (Perhaps last chair Monday or 1st Chair Tuesday for overnight snow). The sum total of the next several days will be respectable but just not confident on single deep events.  I like Sunday and Tuesday best. The extended looks even deeper for Wednesday-Thursday (Statewide event).

Extended:  Tuesday brings a sharp cold front (Lowering snow levels- Better density) into southern Idaho.  This will drag into into the Tetons, Wasatch and most of Colorado Tuesday night into Wednesday. Current models show this system holding together (Less splitting) and impacting a large portion of the West slicing directly from the Tetons (Northern fringe) to the 4 corners (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado).  This could provide decent snowfall to many areas of the West including Taos by late Wednesday/Thursday. Still too far out to predict with confidence.
