For international superstars such Mikaela Shiffrin, the Olympics gave her gold medal; the same was true for Ted Ligety, Matthias Mayer, and Tina Maze. However, what the Olympics gave the town of Sochi was a complete wasteland of development and innumerable environmental impacts.

The massive facilities built by the Russian government to support the games have since gone unused and these pictures of empty expanses of parking lots, skyscraper hotels, and expansive stadiums are staggering.

It all makes one wonder, can we not reuse former Olympic facilities or is that just not attention grabbing enough for our media’s biggest outlets?
