Once a right of passage for CU students, the Boulder City Council is looking to possibly ban skiing and snowboarding on Chautauqua Meadow. The meadow, which is located just above what is commonly referred to as “The Hill” is a popular sledding spot and when snow permits, is a frequented spot by skiers and snowboarders in Boulder County.

As of now, the city council is reviewing a ordinance that would ban any skiing and snowboarding activities on the hill due to the conflict between those sliding on one plank or two and those on a saucer (or sometimes a pizza box).

CU student and avid tele skier Abbott Gilbane recently told Unofficial Networks, “I don’t mind it, I had to have 8 screws put in my wrist” when skiing in that same zone, citing the fact that “there is never a good base in that area.”

In the past, a makeshift ski area with a rope tow existed on the land but since those days of old, sledding has been the main form of winter recreation.

According to the Boulder Camera, ranger supervisor Joe Reale said, “The idea of the sledding hill was for little kids to go sledding,” adding later “It had turned into a large crowds of people snowboarding, and we’ve had crashes and high speeds and conflicts.”

Many have speculated the ordinance has come on the heels of Austin Porzak’s first descent of the First Flatiron this past winter to which Boulder spokesperson Sarah Huntley pointed out “it was not a violation” because he skied the line on telemark bindings.

Non-fixed heel skiing will remain an option for anyone willing to earn their turns.
