Skiing is a sport with a lot of moving parts. And although Jackson locals might understand their needs by reluctantly reciting Chanman’s “skis, boots, poles, pass,” there is much more to skiing than just those 4 pieces of equipment.

Here are the Top 5 Things Skiers Forget When Early Season Skiing

5) Wax

Maybe this should be number one. That said, the fact remains that going slow might be in your best interest. However, excess rust on your edges can give you a sick 5° side bevel, which makes you dangerous to yourself and those around you. So before heading out to get your early season turns in, do a few passes with an edger and throw a healthy amount of wax on the bases of your skis. No need for a full tune yet, that will come after the new year. In the meantime, wax on… wax off.

4) Goggles

When skiing early season, there is one thing I see more than anything else. No goggles. Whether in the backcountry or resort, this seems to be the first thing people forget. In addition to forgotten goggles, gloves get neglected too and are equally if not more important to remember than goggles.

3) 4 wheel drive

The truck has been in 2wd since May and although the road is dry leading up to the mountain don’t get too comfy saving gas and using 2wd. Always be ready for weather to change on mountain roads and passes and remember your car has 4wd.

Beware: The Texas Tahoe (2wd) in the lane next to you…

2) ‘Light Feet’

Although you want to lay over turn after turn Tommy Moe style in the 12” of fresh, it’s just not ready yet. However, it is time to stay light on your feet and show your bases some mercy. So make some wiggles and stay light and centered in your stance before a shark takes a bite out of edge.

1) How to Ski

South Park

The first day back is weird. Awkward turns abound, hands get behind, and falls can and will happen. So take the first day to be humble. Make turns, keep your shoulders square, and hands forward. Uninhibited shralping will follow.
