Heavy snow is falling in many areas of the West. The Cascades grabbed up to 11 inches (Upper peak of Crystal Mountain), as well as automated data from Mount Baker where temperatures stayed near freezing. Whistler-Blackcomb nabbed 7-9 inches on upper mountain. That system raced into the Tahoe basin this morning with cold air and 2-3 inch per hour snowfall rates. Many areas have seen between 9-12 inches. The Tahoe starvation has ended! No Monday Blues. Light snow is likely in the Sierra through Tuesday. WOO HOO SIERRA WHITE ROOM.
The Tetons are getting teased with 6-10 inches at upper elevations and a break in the action currently (Targhee and JHMR). Colder air and light to moderate snow will return on Tuesday (Additional 3-7 with higher amounts in the northern fringes towards Yellowstone). The bulk of that activity on Tuesday is focussed in Idaho and southern Montana where 7-14 inches will fall (Big Sky, Bridger, Yellowstone Club). The Wasatch are surrounded by snowfall (Nevada, Idaho, Tetons, soon to be the San Juans). Snowfall has skirted north and south however will finally tease them on Tuesday /Wednesday (We forecasted 4-8 several days ago and will trend down to 3-5 with perhaps some higher amounts in the Cottonwoods late Tuesday). Don’t panic! We see some cold fronts due for the Wasatch early next week.
****EPIC WATCH ISSUED FOR THE SOUTHERN SAN JUANS- WEDNESDAY*****
We rarely hoist epic alerts however models are putting me on the edge of my chair in early season hope of 12-18 inches in a wide area of the San Juan’s. This will include Durango Mountain, Wolf Creek, Silverton, and Crested Butte. Aspen is our wildcard. Taos will see snowfall but lighter amounts (3-6?). Late Wednesday winds shift to the NW bringing light to moderate snowfall to most of I-70 including Summit County. Steamboat can also fare well with colder temperatures. A second but weaker system drops down from the north on Thursday bringing light snow to most of the State during the day (northern and central mountains favored).
