A low pressure system is building in Alaska which could mean snow for California. NOAA is currently forecasting that this low pressure system will drop down the West Coast of British Columbia, absorbing a weaker system and bringing snow to the Coast Mountains including Whistler Blackcomb on its way to California. Once in California, forecasters are calling for up to 12” of snowfall by the end of Tuesday.

“A cold winter storm is expected to impact the Sierra and western Nevada on Sunday and Monday. Snow could impact travel in the Sierra on Sunday and in the valleys of western Nevada by Monday. Temperatures will be cold to start the week with well below freezing overnight low temperatures throughout the region.” – US National Weather Service Reno Nevada

NOAA’s Long Term Forecast Sunday-Tuesday
THE NEXT EARLY SEASON STORM WILL PUSH INTO THE REGION SUNDAY AND
MONDAY, BRINGING ANOTHER ROUND OF SNOW. FORECASTER CONFIDENCE IS HIGH CONSIDERING THE STORM, ALTHOUGH TOTAL AND SNOW AMOUNTS
MAY STILL CHANGE BETWEEN NOW AND THEN. BREEZY WINDS ARE EXPECTED FOR SUNDAY AS THE 700MB WINDS INCREASE TO NEAR 45KTS. LATEST MODEL TRENDS SHOW AN INITIAL ROUND OF SNOW THAT WILL PUSH THROUGH THE TAHOE AREA ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, BUT STABLE CONDITIONS OVER THE SIERRA WILL KEEP A STRONG RAIN SHADOW UNTIL SOMETIME MONDAY MORNING AFTER THE COLD FRONT PASSES.

BY SUNDAY NIGHT, THE MAIN PUSHES IN WITH HEAVIER PRECIPITATION IN THE SIERRA, THEN SPILLING OVER INTO WESTERN NEVADA BY MONDAY MORNING AS THE COLD FRONT PASSES. THIS STORM WILL BE COLDER THAN THE LAST STORM THAT JUST PASSED WITH HIGHER SNOW RATIOS OVERALL AS THE THIS STORM IS ORIGINATING FROM FROM THE GULF OF ALASKA. WINTER DRIVING CONDITIONS ARE LIKELY FOR THE SIERRA ON MONDAY AND MAY ALSO BE POSSIBLE FOR THE VALLEY FLOORS IN WESTERN NEVADA AS SNOW LEVELS CRASH DOWN TO NEAR 4000 FEET. SEVERAL INCHES OF SNOW ARE LIKELY FOR THE SIERRA, WITH POSSIBLY UP TO A FOOT ALONG THE SIERRACREST WEST OF TAHOE THROUGH MONDAY. FOR WESTERN NEVADA, FORECAST CONFIDENCE IS LOWER IN SNOW AMOUNTS,BUT WILL LIKELY WILL BE LESS THAN A COUPLE INCHES.

DRIER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY WITH A GRADUAL WARM UP THROUGH THE END OF THE WEEK. THERE IS A GOOD CHANCE THAT WE WILL SEE VALLEY INVERSIONS LATE IN THE WEEK.
