It’s not everyday that you find a bomb while standing in lift line.

And although Steamboat Ski Resort is not currently open, that’s exactly what someone found in close proximity to the Pony Express Lift back on October 7th. According to the Steamboat Today, the FBI along with Routt County Sheriff’s department officials are conducting an investigation as to who might have left the device in the local’s favorite lift-line.

As of now, the FBI and Routt County Sheriff’s Department would not go into detail on the device because the investigation is ongoing.

Shortly after the device was uncovered, a bomb squad was called in from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department to defuse the device, which they ultimately “rendered safe,” said a news release from the Routt County Sheriff’s Department.

“We would like to encourage citizens to be attentive and use caution if a suspicious device is found.”– Ray Birch, Routt County Undersheriff

Although authorities would not say who found the device but they did indicate it was not attached to the lift. According to FBI spokeswoman Deborah Sherman, “It wasn’t intentionally placed to blow up the ski lift.”

shortly after the ‘explosive device’ was discovered, authorities searched other ski areas in the area for similar devices. No devices were found.
