Canada’s new prime minister, Justin Trudeau is making waves. The newly elected head of state is already attempting to change the way people think about energy in Canada by adding a brand new position to his already publicized cabinet appointments.
“The Minister of Environment and Climate Change” is a brand new positon and the position is filled by Catherine McKenna, a former social justice and human rights advocate. Mckenna has advocated for social change as a lawyer, creating non-profit opportunities for lawyers in developing countries through the University of Ottawa.

Mckenna will jump into her duties by attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference at the end of this month. However, according to administration officials, she will not discuss carbon reduction goals at the conference itself, seeing as the minister will only have been in office a mere month. Before setting goals for the Canada’s energy sector, she will seek input from local as well as government officials.
