In what amounts to one tragic accident that left a country in mourning, a former Turkish Ski Federation President, Özer Ayık will avoid prison time in what started as an involuntary manslaughter charge after the death of Turkish Alpine skier Aslı Nemutlu reports The Daily Sabah.

The accident, which occurred back in January of 2012, involved Nemutlu, who was skiing when she fell and slid into a wooden barrier at high-speed. The collision broke the 18-year old skier’s neck and she was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital shortly after.

Originally, the former federation president was sentenced to 2 1/2 years of jail time for “causing someone’s death involuntarily” but that verdict was reduced to a fine of roughly $6,300 instead. He is also banned from serving in any appointed office related to skiing for one year.

The former Turkish Ski Federation President was among six defendants who were issued fines while nine others were acquitted of the charges.
