After being lost in the Sierra Nevada Nation Forest for 9 days, Miyuki Harwood is lucky be alive. The 62-year-old from Folsom, California reportedly went missing on August 20th after she parted ways with the group she was camping with close to Horsehead Lake. After becoming estranged from her Sierra Club trip group, Harwood sustained multiple broken bones and could not make it back to her base camp. When she failed to return, her fellow campers reported her missing.

From the location of her injury, it took her almost two days to crawl down to a nearby creek, where she filtered water to drink. Although she had a filtration system, she was not prepared for an overnight stay.

According to an interview with WTVR, Rusty Hotchkiss of the California Highway Patrol flight officer said, “She was really at the end of the time period when we thought she could survive.”

Officials even employed Chinook as well Blackhawk Helicopters in the search but a nearby forest fire prevented a successful effort by airborne efforts.

However, when ground crews starting closing in on her position just east of the Courtright Reservoir, “She heard them talking, she heard voices and she grabbed a whistle she had with her,” said Hotchkiss at a press conference this past Saturday.

She had not eaten in 9 days.

When crews arrived at her location, she was conscious and talking. A helicopter airlifted her to a hospital in the area.

As of now, which bones were broken and her current condition are undisclosed.
