According to Yosemite Park officials, a large section of rock has fallen off the Regular Northwest Face (5.9 C1, 2000’) route on Half Dome. Climbing Magazine is reporting that the route is currently unclimbable since the large flake of rock fell to the valley floor during the 4th of July weekend festivities.

The actual time of the rock fall is so far unknown and many valley dwellers believe it’s a miracle that no one was injured on such a busy weekend for the National Park. A group of climbers attempted the route on July 5th and realized the route had been significantly altered resulting in a decision to retreat back down the route.

As far as the future of the climb is concerned, there is a great deal of uncertainty as to how park officials and climbing experts will alter the route to make it safe for the climbing public without compromising the rock further or putting climbers under unnecessary exposure to future falls.
