Environmental Groups are trying to stop Texas Business man B.J. “Red” McCombs from developing the base area at Wolf Creek, saying that the environmental impacts outweigh any reason to move forward with the proposed plan.

The land swap approved in May by the U.S. Forest Service, exchanges 177 acres of private land for 205 acres of Forest Service land, and allows McComb’s dream of creating a resort quality base area at Wolf Creek a possibility. However, a conglomerate of environmental groups is now banding together and on Wednesday, they slapped the federal government with a lawsuit that would halt the development of the ski area base village.

In an interview with the Durango Herald, Matt Sandler of Rocky Mountain Wild recently commented on the situation saying, “This land exchange was completed without the full and transparent analysis of the impacts that is required by law,” adding “These laws are in place to protect the public interest; this Forest Service decision protects the interests of big business and billionaires.”

The Forest Service on the other hand says its hands are tied due to legal precedent that requires those with in-holdings to have legitimate access to their private properties.

The coalition is planning on traveling to Washington D.C. to argue their case to federal agencies including the U.S. Forest Service.
