Over the past 3 days, an “El Nino” storm rolled into Arapahoe Basin Ski Area and dumped 11’’ on the only resort in Colorado still spinning its lifts.

Reports are coming out that yesterday, May 17th, was one of the best days of the season at the ski area, which boasts the highest lift served skiing in the United States. With 6’’ of new snow and every kind of weather imaginable, skiers were elated at the unseasonable, mid-winter conditions they found throughout the weekend.

And it’s not over yet.

With 8’’ and cold temperatures in the forecast for the next two days, the 7-day snow total could contain up to two feet of accumulation. The snow is staying especially good above 10,000 feet and the coverage and conditions look to get even better with more new snow this week.

On Saturday, The East Wall was all-time for May 16th and even though there were sharks here and there, the riding was steep and smooth. Coverage should be even less of a factor by Tuesday and conditions will only get better by mid week.

Note: It’s May 18th—Weird.

The abundant spring snow is a godsend for Colorado skiers as well as the Arapahoe Basin Ski Area. On May 12th, the ski area posted a record-breaking tally for single day skier visits, which eclipsed the 2010 record by 15%. All in all, this spring season may go down as the best ever for the ski area.

With all the late season snow and cold temps, it seems that Arapahoe Basin will surpass its planned June 7 closing date. Now the only question is… can “The Basin” make it to July 4th?
