The five remaining ski resorts still open in the Tahoe region – Kirkwood, Squaw, Mt. Rose, Northstar, and Heavenly – will be closing for the season this Sunday following one of the worst ski season in the history of California skiing. It has been such a bad seasons that the snowpack is at less than 5% of the average for this time of the year. On April 1, The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) found no snow whatsoever during its manual survey for the media at 6,800 feet in the Sierra Nevada. This was the first time in 75 years of early-April measurements that no snow was found.

Despite all of this, the resorts that have stayed open have managed to keep their ski seasons going from November to mid April. As a consolation prize, Tahoe received 2 feet of new snow last week making for some sold late season skiing.
