It is being reported that two skiers were caught in the avalanche yesterday afternoon resulting in the death of one of the skiers. The slide occurred  in an out-of-bounds area of Aspen Mountain in the Castle Creek Valley.

The second skier was uninjured and was able to notify rescuers about what happened.

“Members of the Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol successfully located the body of the missing skier shortly after 4:00 p.m at the bottom of a snow-covered chute at approximately 9,400 feet. A total of seven patrollers and rescue equipment were brought to the scene. The skier was pronounced dead at approximately 5:00 p.m,” a statement from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office said.

Search crews plan to recover the victim’s body from the area Tuesday once additional avalanche hazards in the area are dealt with.

The victim’s identity was not released.
