Many ski resorts around the US have banned hiking and skinning during the winter months, but Aspen Skiing Co. says it will continue to allow people to hike or ski uphill for free during the winter ski season.

The Aspen Times reported Tuesday uphill skiing is increasingly popular.

Aspen Skiing Co. Vice President of Mountain Operations Rich Burkley says company isn’t contemplating a fee for uphill skiing at any of its four resorts, and if it had one, enforcement would be difficult.

Burkley says safety is the resort’s primary concern, but no collisions between uphill and downhill skiers have been reported.

He says uphill skiing is an important and growing part of the resort’s culture.
