A new ski resort is being proposed in the Shimla district of India. Skiing has become more popular in the world’s second most populous nation over the past few years and officials in Shimla would like to see the same growth in tourism as was seen in the Baramula district in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir with the opening of Gulmarg.

“We will consider in near future to develop a ski resort at Chanshal near Rohru in Shimla district besides developing Bashal Kanda area for which the tourism department has been asked to conduct a survey for constructing ropeway,” said the chief minister, Vibhadra Singh.

Skiing in India is an activity that mostly takes place in the northern states of India, where the Himalayas are situated. The Himalayas provide an excellent skiing experience owing to their great height which makes for long descents. Heliskiing is also gaining popularity in places like Manali and Gulmarg. However skiing in India suffers from lack of infrastructure. There are also security concerns in Gulmarg which is 20 km from the Line of Control, however since 2002, it has been peaceful, which has led to an increase in skiing activity in the region.
