Four climbers died over the weekend in two separate avalanches in the Swiss Alps.

A 40-year-old British woman died alongside a Swiss man of 50, as they and four others were scaling the 11,000ft Pointes de Mourti mountain. The group was hit by a 150-metre wide avalanche which had broken away from a glacier at 7.25am on Saturday. They were just 100m from the summit.

In a separate incident a 28-year old Swiss climber and a 30-year old German were killed while climbing near Zermatt. They too were hit by an avalanche of snow, ice and rocks. It is reported there was a rise in temperature on Saturday which nay have contributed to the instability of the snow and ice. The second incident happened in the afternoon at 15.30.

Investigations are underway into both incidents.
