The first stage of an urban lift system in Bolivia has officially opened. The new gondola route travels from the capital La Paz to the city suburb of El Alton at 13,615′ (4,150m). 

The Bolivian gondola project is headed by Austrian lift company, Dopplemayer, and is estimated to cost $234 million. When it is finished the urban lift it will run 10kms long, operate 17 hours per day and will have the capacity to transport 18,000 people an hour. The new lift system is projected to cut commuters travel time from 30 minutes of dangerous driving down a narrow congested streets, to just 10 minutes within a comfortable gondola.
