The official kick-off to the New Zealand ski season is just about a month away but resorts on the South Island are already enjoying their first snowfalls. Over 30cm of snow has already fallen from the latest storm, which blanketed the high peaks of the Southern Alps. Cold temps this week will allow the resorts to blow snow, adding depth to their early season bases.
“Our crew has been forced to turn around at the 12km mark. There is AT LEAST 50cm on the road. Here is a picture from the bottom of the road… HELLO WINTER!!!!!” – Cardrona Alpine Resort, NZ
“More photos from up on the hill revealing the new snow at Treble Cone. 25-30cm in the car park, and it’s currently -5 degrees Celsius mid mountain. Don’t forget this is the final week to grab a discounted 5 or 10 day flexible Powder Pass or Treble Cone Season Pass.” – Treble Cone Ski Area
“Woooohhhooo winter is setting in!!! This shot was taken from Mt Hutt Station Road this morning. As you can see we received about 5cm of new snow overnight and with these chilly temperatures we have excellent conditions for snow making. Excitement PLUS!!!” – Mt Hutt
“Jealous much?. We’ve had some keen locals come up to have a play in the snow. A group of QRC Students trekked up the Meadows Express Chair and had 1 run down, and another local got his touring gear and dog out for some snow fun.” – Coronet Peak
