Maria Magdalena Stanila is suing Mt. Hood Skibowl in Oregon for what the lawsuit describes as “A Ski Bowl Culture of Alcohol-Fueled Adrenaline From The Top Down.”
Stanila alleges that she sustained “serious injuries” after a collision with a snowboarder believed to be drunk. Stanila feels that Mt. Hood Skibowl has a permissive attitude toward alcohol, creating an environment in which sober and intoxicated people ski and snowboard next to each other.
According to the suit: Skibowl served Kyle “Roundhouse” Sullivan alcohol while he was visibly intoxicated and that that Skibowl “was on notice” that Sullivan could be a problem because he said that he had been “previously cut-off and/or ejected from Ski Bowl’s bar for his over-consumption of alcohol and dangerous skiing.” The suit goes on to say that 30-year-old “Roundhouse” had cans of beer on him when he attempted to overtake Stanila from behind at a high rate of speed.
The lawsuit also claims that Skibowl’s owner — Kirk Hanna — has “led by example,” referring to Hanna’s guilty plea to a DUI and hit-and-run in a May 2010 incident in which Hanna, driving at an estimated 80 mph, struck a bicyclist and drove off. The cyclist suffered fractures to his jaw, scapula, tibia and 13 broken teeth. Hanna ended up paying the cyclist a half a million dollars.
