For decades the British Royal Family have been taking their ski vacations in the Swiss Alps. This year Prince Harry broke with tradition and opted to take his girlfriend Cressida Bonas on a ski trip to Kazakhstan. Yes, Kazakhstan, Borat’s homeland.
Their romantic winter break in the ex-Soviet state seems like an odd choice but Kazakhstan is tipped as an up-and-coming skiing destination with seven new resorts planned in the 4,000m mountains that surround the capital Almaty. The country is also a favorite of Harry’s uncle Prince Andrew who sold his 600-acre Berkshire estate to the son-in-law of Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev.
Prince Andrew visited Kazakhstan several times as part of his role as UK Special Ambassador and one occasion even went goose hunting with President Nazarbeyev.
