Little backstory – this happened at Alyeska Resort in Girdwood, Alaska, where I’m on the patrol. The kid cut off a snowboarder who was goin a little too fast. She (the snowboarder) kind of “reared up” trying to stop, was unable to do so, and the tip of her board ended up contracting square with the kid’s forehead. As you can see, the helmet took the brunt of the force – the kid ended up needing 8 staples to close up a laceration on his forehead, but besides that he seems to be doing fine and is expected to make a full recovery. This is the second time in as many years we’ve seen an accident where if the kid involved had not been wearing a helmet, things could (would) had turned out very differently.

Wear your helmets and give your buddies who don’t a hard time. I’ve broken one myself before and dented another with the edge if my ski. My sister shattered the inside of one with a really bad fall 6 years ago, where ahe was unconcious for several minutes. Things happen real fast and there’s often not much you can do except try and mitigate your risks. Wearing a helmet is one of the best things you can do in this regard.
