EPIC ALERT- NEW ENGLAND
EPIC ALERT issued for deep snow to begin late tonight through Thursday over a large portion of New England and upstate New York. The highest amounts from our model runs will be in northern Vermont, closely followed by central New Hampshire and Maine. Picks for chases would include Sugarbush, Stowe, Smugglers, Sugarloaf, and areas in the Catskills. Ice-snow mix will likely occur near the coast and in southern areas.
The Rockies are in high pressure until a light system moves into the Wasatch this weekend. Northern Colorado along I-70 might reap some benefits of NW flow on Saturday. When looking out 5-10 days there appears to be some better action for the Northwest (BC especially) from March 19-21. That storm then progresses over the northern Rockies. Long term I am bullish on the Cascades and BC.
ALASKA is reaping rewards of significant snowfall at upper elevations (Some rain mix at the bases). Thompson Pass is deep and will pick up steady light to moderate snowfall through Saturday. Heavier snow is possible early next week. Aleyeska Resort has had lower than average snowfall this season. This week will be a definite game changer. I would give a thumbs up for any chases there in the near future!
Here is a picture of one our favorite lifts in the West. The High Campbell chairlift at Crystal Mountain was destroyed when avalanche control work was conducted after the ski area had closed. This is an amazing reminder of the power of an avalanche. Crystal had received several inches of wet snow, rain, and mixed precipitation over many days. This resulted in a very unstable snowpack. The plan is to replace this lift during the summer.
