With lest than a week to go before the most expensive Olympic Games ever the resort town of Sochi looks like a construction zone. These photos taken last week by Alexander Valov show just how unprepared Sochi looks to be in the lead-up to the biggest sporting event in the world.
It is now being reported that only six of nine media hotels are finished, and work is still underway at the Olympic Village and many of the venue sites. To make matters worse, illegal landfills are popping up around Sochi with devastating environmental effects. All of this despite spending $51 billion, which is nearly $40 billion more than Russia’s original budget for the games. It’s also nearly $40 billion more than the total cost of the last winter Olympics, in Vancouver.
However, don’t count Mr. Putin and his pet project out quite yet. Â There are are some 70,000 workers on site who will be working around the clock to finish what remains of the Olympic venues.
