Following a massive snowstorm the avalanche danger level is at it’s highest in parts of Austria.

The Alps have been receiving some of the heaviest snow they have seen in 15 years. In some areas of Austria 1.5m has fallen in just 24 hours. All of this snow has made for very unstable conditions. Things have goten so bad that Austrian authorities advised people to stay indoors and not to drive unless absolutely necessary.

“Numerous large natural avalanches are likely to reach low angle slopes. Extensive safety measures (closures and evacuation) are necessary. No off-piste or back country skiing or travel should be undertaken due to a high risk of exposure,” is the official definition.
