Gnome at Revelstoke tallies the deep dump of 30 CM January 3, 2014

WHERE TO CHASE THIS WEEKEND? – Powderchasers.com

Heavy snow has fallen over central BC from Revelstoke to Fernie where over 35 CM has fallen since yesterday. 12-15 inches of “Cold Smoke Powder” have fallen in New England!  Heavy snow has finally returned to the northern Cascades and Whistler where over a foot has fallen.Strong winds, and a sharp cold front moving through Montana will work it’s way into the Tetons by late this morning and into the Colorado northern Rockies by 4AM Saturday.   Northern Montana will reap double digit snowfall amounts.  Bozeman area mountains see 4-7 inches primarily during the day Friday through the evening (Bridger, and Big Sky).

The Tetons will split 5-8 inches between today and tonight (Ski PM today and AM Saturday).  My expectation is that more terrain is likely to open over Jackson Hole where lower elevations have still needed snow (Hobacks).  The track of the storm favors the Jackson side of the pass and far less in the Idaho mountains.   TheWasatch will see light snow develop Friday PM through Saturday AM where 3-5 inches are likely in the Cottonwoods and 1-3 in elsewhere.  No snow has fallen there in several weeks!

Colorado reaps high end rewards very early Saturday morning through Sunday.  Winds go from NW, W, to North so all areas of northern Colorado will see moderate to heavy snow. Steamboat will be highlighted for the deepest on Saturday morning (5-9) and may reach 11-16 by Saturday night.  With a wind shift to the NW Vail will kick off 4-8 inches by late Saturday and another 3-7 in the evening.  Northerly flow follows Saturday night where the front range resorts all the way to Monarch will see moderate snowfall (Eldora, Winter Park, Loveland, Monarch).

Where to chase?

Friday:  BC resorts (Revy-35 CM, Whitewater, Red Mountain, Kicking Horse).  Mount Baker, Alpental (Wet Mank).

Friday PM (northern Montana, Idaho, Jackson Hole)

Saturday AM (Jackson, Steamboat, Vail )

Saturday PM (Vail, Winter Park, Breckenridge, Keystone, Steamboat continues)

Sunday AM– Eldora, Loveland, Monarch, Summit County

Enjoy the 1st weekend of 2014 and hopefully we will see you on the slopes!
