Swedish officials have recently manadated that Icehotel, in the town of Jukkasjärvi, install fire alarms. Being friendly Nordic people the owners of the Icehotel politely complied despite the fact that their entire hotel is made out of ice.

In an interview with the AFP Icehotel spokesperson Beatrice Karlsson gave this diplomatic comment on the situation. “There are things that can actually catch fire, like pillows, sleeping bags or reindeer skins,” she said. “It’s been a challenge for our building team, but it made us one experience richer.”

In the history of the hotel there has never been a single fire. However, the smoke detectors did go off when a guest light up a smoke in a hotel closet. [Time]
