Melting Snow Into Drinking Water With A Garbage Bag – “Tip Of The Week”

How to save time, energy, and fuel by using the sun and a common plastic garbage bag to melt snow. When your primary water source is in the form of snow, this simple “solar powered” technique can be invaluable. This hands-off method frees up your time by doing the work for you so that you can attend to other camp chores… or simply relax and soak in the beauty of the wilderness. Of course this technique relies heavily on temperature and sunlight to work at maximum effectiveness. When conditions are less than “optimal” however, this approach can still be utilized by creating a simple solar still. Another black plastic bag can be placed over the top to help retain more heat, or you can simply fill the bag with snow and seal it to attain the same effect. An added benefit is that most hikers and backpackers already carry these bags for use as pack rain covers, cheap ponchos, emergency shelters, or simply for their intended use…. as a trash bag 😉
