What was originally meant as an April Fool’s Day joke is now a reality.

Denver’s Wynkoop Brewing Co. has created a limited-run stout featuring roasted bull testicles.  Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout will soon be sold in cans nationwide and in the most appropriate fashion: two-packs.

Made with 25 lbs of roasted bull gonads, Wynkoop’s brewers said they wanted to showcase a local delicacy…deep-fried bull testicles, also known as Rocky Mountain oysters.  The beer debuted last October at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver and received a lot of attention.

Wynkoop spokesman Marty Jones told FoxNews.com the beer –which is currently available on tap at Wynkoop–will soon be available in cans in the Denver area. It will also be available through BeerJobber.com in about two weeks. The brewery hasn’t nailed down a price, but Jones said that each two-pack will probably cost about $7-$8.

The idea to actually brew the bull testicle beer wasn’t too much of a stretch for Wynkoop after a spoof video promoting the fictional beer made for April Fools’ Day last year became a hit among brewers and bloggers.  But getting it approved by the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau wasn’t so easy. After hitting some snags, the agency recently approved the brewery’s label for the beer, which describes the brew as “a luscious, uniquely ballsy stout with notes of roasted barley, coffee and nuts.”

“Initially, they wanted us to provide some information on bull testicles as a food additive,” Jones told Westword. “I am not sure they were aware that bull testicles are an actual food and that they are a regional delicacy out West.” (foxnews.com)

According to Wynkoop’s web site, the beer is made with Colorado-grown base malts, roasted barley, seven specialty malts (including special B and smoked malt) and Styrian Goldings hops. The beer gets a small dose of sea salt, too. “It gives the beer an extra layer of Rocky Mountain oyster flavor,” notes Wynkoop Head Brewer Andy Brown, “and additional texture.”

Here’s the spoof video that was released last April:

The 8-barrel batch also included 25 pounds of bull testicles that were sliced by hand and then roasted (by Wynkoop sous chef Andrew Langlo) before being added to the beer’s mash.

Rocky Mountain Oyster Stout is an assertive foreign-style stout, slightly viscous, with a deep brown color. It has equally deep flavors of chocolate syrup, Kahlua, and espresso, along with a palpable level of alcohol and a savory umami-like note.It finishes dry and roasted with a fast-fading hop bite.

The beer is 7% ABV and has 3 BPBs. That’s balls per barrel.

Cheers!
