Intro by Paul Kimbrough

Remember the old K2 Telemark poster with a picture of Jeff Giffin inverted with a mute grab?  It reads, “Take something hard, make it harder, then make it look easy.”  Jake showed up in Driggs with a used pair of leather tele boots he purchased at a second hand store in Colorado.  After only a few runs on pins and leathers he was praising the feel.  “There’s no back seat, no front seat, only a perfectly balanced middle seat, you have to be 100% on it,” he claimed.  A little nervous and not yet convinced, I borrowed an old pair from Chris Valiante of 22-Designs and gave it a go on a beautiful bluebird day at Grand Targhee.  The boots felt comfy, a little too roomy, and skied like bleep!  Just getting off the lift became a challenge.  The Zen like level of focus required to ski reminded me of my early days telemarking. Leathers made even the mellowest of groomers, small jumps and bumps thrilling. Surprising, many of the fundamentals from telemarking on plastic boots transfer over to leathers and by day three we were feeling it. Get out and try it yourself!
